Seven Tips for Successful Living
Do you own your own business or have a demanding job? Is your spouse telling you he/she
is lonely, your kids are growing right before your eyes and you are missing their ball
games or recitals? Then it is time to get back into balance while maintaining your high level
of performance.
Many people make the mistake of confusing high performance with neglect of family and
responsibility. After working 6-7 days a week for 6 years, gaining 40 pounds and hearing
the words "what you are doing is not compatible with life" I knew it was time for a change.
Hearing those 9 words changed my life and I want to help you regain your balance right now!
Here is how I did it and how you can do it, too.
- Conduct a skill assessment on yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Focus on your strengths and delegate or pay for your weaknesses. As a business owner I
felt it was my responsibility to do everything. As my business began to falter and my
relationship with my spouse began to suffer I realized my weakness-handling the
administrative paperwork was holding me back. I would work in the business, and then do
paperwork at night. When I hired a Business Manager, my business improved because I could
now focus on the customer, plus my relationship with my spouse improved because I had more
time. Give it up so you can go up!
- Physical Conditioning: The most common reason for not exercising is time. However,
everyone has 24 hours in a day and if the President of the United States can find time to
work out, I am sure we can too. The key is to create a system that is easy to follow.
Make it part of your daily routine. Take the stairs at work, walk to and from lunch, or
as soon as you wake in the morning. As you age you will notice a significant loss of
strength and I would encourage you to lift weights to maintain your strength. The key is
to do something on a regular basis.
- Sleep: Do you hit a wall after lunch everyday? It may be what you are eating, but you
also may be sleep deprived. Doctors have determined that all of us need about 8 hours of
sleep per day. If you want to maximize your career performance then get adequate rest.
Try to go to bed and wake at the same time each day, even on the weekends. This should
help eliminate the afternoon sleep spell.
- Emotional Strength: Recognize your signs of stress. Do you gain weight, have
difficulty sleeping, or eating? When you recognize your signs of stress, then determine
what is causing it and deal with it or get professional counseling to help you. Many
corporations have an Employee Assistance Program to help employees who need assistance.
Seek them out it may save your life, marriage or career.
- Spiritual Strength: Sometime in life if a challenge comes our way the only way we can
deal with it is through our faith. Becoming an entrepreneur was a big step for me. Many
goals worthy of achievement require a strong faith and belief that you can and will be
successful. If you're breathing and able to read or have this article read to you and you
can comprehend, now may be the time to say thank you.
- Relationship: No matter how busy you are, set aside time for you and your loved ones.
Many CEO's, business owners, and sales people have high rates of divorce due to their
travel schedules and demands of their professions. Turn off your cell phone when you get
home (unless you're on call) and set aside time for your family.
- Setting Goals: Employees create plans for companies, and people help organizations,
churches and schools reach their goals, yet when you ask someone what is their personal
long term vision they don't have one. How tragic. Life can be a monster at times and
without goals or a focus you're forced to take the abuse life has to give.
With goals that are consistent and balanced both personally and professionally your life
gains greater meaning and you become more productive.
By focusing on these seven tips your life will be more complete and you will find the true
meaning to "Diverse Wealth."
