"We add value." These words – used left and right by advisors and agents – are critical to getting and keeping wealthy business owners as clients.

But how many advisors really add value? Believe me; wealthy entrepreneurs know which advisors add value and which ones don't.

We need advisors to help us with our investments, but what we want are partners to help us grow our businesses, create wealth, and achieve business, personal and legacy goals. If you're not doing that, you aren't adding enough value.

Sit down and think about your client's business model. What can you do to protect his business and financial interests? How can you help her make her company more successful? Can you make useful connections? Consider these strategies.

  1. Brainstorm ideas that can increase profits, minimize expenses, and reduce costs. For example, if your client pays expenses by check, you can recommend the use of a debit card that awards "points." The bills get paid, and your client saves money on business trips, vacations or incentives for employees.
  2. Identify opportunities to reduce hassles for your clients and their employees. Be proactive in seeking out resources and tools such as online bill paying, to help them improve business processes so their day-to-day, monthly and annual activities run more smoothly.
  3. Do your utmost to raise your clients' visibility in the community. Review your list of contacts to see if you can make a valuable introduction. Look for places where your clients could speak or be published. Perhaps you can even arrange for them to receive an award.

Wealthy entrepreneurs welcome initiative. They expect their advisors to make their lives easier while helping them build their businesses, grow their assets, and protect their families. Do that for your clients, and you really will be adding value. In return, they will sing your praises to their friends and associates.
